To accommodate new applications such as extended reality, fully autonomous vehicular networks and the metaverse, next generation wireless networks are going to be subject to much more stringent performance requirements than the fifth-generation (5G) in terms of data rates, reliability, latency, and connectivity. It is thus necessary to develop next generation advanced transceiver (NGAT) technologies for efficient signal transmission and reception. In this tutorial, we explore the evolution of NGAT from three different perspectives. Specifically, we first provide an overview of new-field NGAT technology, which shifts from conventional far-field channel models to new near-field channel models. Then, three new-form NGAT technologies and their design challenges are presented, including reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, flexible antennas, and holographic multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. Subsequently, we discuss recent advances in semantic-aware NGAT technologies, which can utilize new metrics for advanced transceiver designs. Finally, we point out other promising transceiver technologies for future research.
Intelligent Surfaces Empowered Wireless Network: Recent Advances and The Road to 6G
Jan 15, 2024Intelligent surfaces (ISs) have emerged as a key technology to empower a wide range of appealing applications for wireless networks, due to their low cost, high energy efficiency, flexibility of deployment and capability of constructing favorable wireless channels/radio environments. Moreover, the recent advent of several new IS architectures further expanded their electromagnetic functionalities from passive reflection to active amplification, simultaneous reflection and refraction, as well as holographic beamforming. However, the research on ISs is still in rapid progress and there have been recent technological advances in ISs and their emerging applications that are worthy of a timely review. Thus, we provide in this paper a comprehensive survey on the recent development and advances of ISs aided wireless networks. Specifically, we start with an overview on the anticipated use cases of ISs in future wireless networks such as 6G, followed by a summary of the recent standardization activities related to ISs. Then, the main design issues of the commonly adopted reflection-based IS and their state-of-theart solutions are presented in detail, including reflection optimization, deployment, signal modulation, wireless sensing, and integrated sensing and communications. Finally, recent progress and new challenges in advanced IS architectures are discussed to inspire futrue research.
Sparse Array Enabled Near-Field Communications: Beam Pattern Analysis and Hybrid Beamforming Design
Jan 11, 2024Extremely large-scale array (XL-array) has emerged as a promising technology to enable near-field communications for achieving enhanced spectrum efficiency and spatial resolution, by drastically increasing the number of antennas. However, this also inevitably incurs higher hardware and energy cost, which may not be affordable in future wireless systems. To address this issue, we propose in this paper to exploit two types of sparse arrays (SAs) for enabling near-field communications. Specifically, we first consider the linear sparse array (LSA) and characterize its near-field beam pattern. It is shown that despite the achieved beam-focusing gain, the LSA introduces several undesired grating-lobes, which have comparable beam power with the main-lobe and are focused on specific regions. An efficient hybrid beamforming design is then proposed for the LSA to deal with the potential strong inter-user interference (IUI). Next, we consider another form of SA, called extended coprime array (ECA), which is composed of two LSA subarrays with different (coprime) inter-antenna spacing. By characterizing the ECA near-field beam pattern, we show that compared with the LSA with the same array sparsity, the ECA can greatly suppress the beam power of near-field grating-lobes thanks to the offset effect of the two subarrays, albeit with a larger number of grating-lobes. This thus motivates us to propose a customized two-phase hybrid beamforming design for the ECA. Finally, numerical results are presented to demonstrate the rate performance gain of the proposed two SAs over the conventional uniform linear array (ULA).
Semantic-Relay-Aided Text Transmission: Placement Optimization and Bandwidth Allocation
Nov 16, 2023Semantic communication has emerged as a promising technology to break the Shannon limit by extracting the meaning of source data and sending relevant semantic information only. However, some mobile devices may have limited computation and storage resources, which renders it difficult to deploy and implement the resource-demanding deep learning based semantic encoder/decoder. To tackle this challenge, we propose in this paper a new semantic relay (SemRelay), which is equipped with a semantic receiver for assisting text transmission from a resource-abundant base station (BS) to a resource-constrained mobile device. Specifically, the SemRelay first decodes the semantic information sent by the BS (with a semantic transmitter) and then forwards it to the user by adopting conventional bit transmission, hence effectively improving the text transmission efficiency. We formulate an optimization problem to maximize the achievable (effective) bit rate by jointly designing the SemRelay placement and bandwidth allocation. Although this problem is non-convex and generally difficult to solve, we propose an efficient penalty-based algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution. Numerical results show the close-to-optimal performance of the proposed algorithm as well as significant rate performance gain of the proposed SemRelay over conventional decode-and-forward relay.
Multiuser Resource Allocation for Semantic-Relay-Aided Text Transmissions
Nov 12, 2023Semantic communication (SemCom) is an emerging technology that extracts useful meaning from data and sends only relevant semantic information. Thus, it has the great potential to improve the spectrum efficiency of conventional wireless systems with bit transmissions, especially in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and small bandwidth regions. However, the existing works have mostly overlooked the constraints of mobile devices, which may not have sufficient capabilities to implement resource-demanding semantic encoder/decoder based on deep learning. To address this issue, we propose in this paper a new semantic relay (SemRelay), which is equipped with a semantic receiver to assist multiuser text transmissions. Specifically, the SemRelay decodes semantic information from a base station and forwards it to the users using conventional bit transmission, hence effectively improving text transmission efficiency. To study the multiuser resource allocation, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the multiuser weighted sum-rate by jointly designing the SemRelay transmit power allocation and system bandwidth allocation. Although this problem is non-convex and hence challenging to solve, we propose an efficient algorithm to obtain its high-quality suboptimal solution by using the block coordinate descent method. Last, numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm as well as superior performance of the proposed SemRelay over the conventional decode-and-forward (DF) relay, especially in small bandwidth region.
Resource Allocation for RIS-Empowered Wireless Communications: Low-Complexity and Robust Designs
Nov 06, 2023This article delves into advancements in resource allocation techniques tailored for systems utilizing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), with a primary focus on achieving low-complexity and resilient solutions. The investigation of low-complexity approaches for RIS holds significant relevance, primarily owing to the intricate characteristics inherent in RIS-based systems and the need of deploying large-scale RIS arrays. Concurrently, the exploration of robust solutions aims to address the issue of hardware impairments occurring at both the transceivers and RIS components in practical RIS-assisted systems. In the realm of both low-complexity and robust resource allocation, this article not only elucidates the fundamental techniques underpinning these methodologies but also offers comprehensive numerical results for illustrative purposes. The necessity of adopting resource allocation strategies that are both low in complexity and resilient is thoroughly established. Ultimately, this article provides prospective research avenues in the domain of low-complexity and robust resource allocation techniques tailored for RIS-assisted systems.
SWIPT in Mixed Near- and Far-Field Channels: Joint Beam Scheduling and Power Allocation
Oct 31, 2023Extremely large-scale array (XL-array) has emerged as a promising technology to enhance the spectrum efficiency and spatial resolution in future wireless networks by exploiting massive number of antennas for generating pencil-like beamforming. This also leads to a fundamental paradigm shift from conventional far-field communications towards the new near-field communications. In contrast to the existing works that mostly considered simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in the far field, we consider in this paper a new and practical scenario, called mixed near- and far-field SWIPT, where energy harvesting (EH) and information decoding (ID) receivers are located in the near- and far-field regions of the XL-array base station (BS), respectively. Specifically, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the weighted sum-power harvested at all EH receivers by jointly designing the BS beam scheduling and power allocation, under the constraints on the maximum sum-rate and BS transmit power. First, for the general case with multiple EH and ID receivers, we propose an efficient algorithm to obtain a suboptimal solution by utilizing the binary variable elimination and successive convex approximation methods. To obtain useful insights, we then study the joint design for special cases. In particular, we show that when there are multiple EH receivers and one ID receiver, in most cases, the optimal design is allocating a portion of power to the ID receiver for satisfying the rate constraint, while the remaining power is allocated to one EH receiver with the highest EH capability. This is in sharp contrast to the conventional far-field SWIPT case, for which all powers should be allocated to ID receivers. Numerical results show that our proposed joint design significantly outperforms other benchmark schemes without the optimization of beam scheduling and/or power allocation.
Near-Field Positioning and Attitude Sensing Based on Electromagnetic Propagation Modeling
Oct 26, 2023Positioning and sensing over wireless networks are imperative for many emerging applications. However, traditional wireless channel models cannot be used for sensing the attitude of the user equipment (UE), since they over-simplify the UE as a point target. In this paper, a comprehensive electromagnetic propagation modeling (EPM) based on electromagnetic theory is developed to precisely model the near-field channel. For the noise-free case, the EPM model establishes the non-linear functional dependence of observed signals on both the position and attitude of the UE. To address the difficulty in the non-linear coupling, we first propose to divide the distance domain into three regions, separated by the defined Phase ambiguity distance and Spacing constraint distance. Then, for each region, we obtain the closed-form solutions for joint position and attitude estimation with low complexity. Next, to investigate the impact of random noise on the joint estimation performance, the Ziv-Zakai bound (ZZB) is derived to yield useful insights. The expected Cram\'er-Rao bound (ECRB) is further provided to obtain the simplified closed-form expressions for the performance lower bounds. Our numerical results demonstrate that the derived ZZB can provide accurate predictions of the performance of estimators in all signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes. More importantly, we achieve the millimeter-level accuracy in position estimation and attain the 0.1-level accuracy in attitude estimation.
A Tutorial on Near-Field XL-MIMO Communications Towards 6G

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is a promising technology for the sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication networks. By significantly boosting the antenna number or size to at least an order of magnitude beyond current massive MIMO systems, XL-MIMO is expected to unprecedentedly enhance the spectral efficiency and spatial resolution for wireless communication. The evolution from massive MIMO to XL-MIMO is not simply an increase in the array size, but faces new design challenges, in terms of near-field channel modelling, performance analysis, channel estimation, and practical implementation. In this article, we give a comprehensive tutorial overview on near-field XL-MIMO communications, aiming to provide useful guidance for tackling the above challenges. First, the basic near-field modelling for XL-MIMO is established, by considering the new characteristics of non-uniform spherical wave (NUSW) and spatial non-stationarity. Next, based on the near-field modelling, the performance analysis of XL-MIMO is presented, including the near-field signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scaling laws, beam focusing pattern, achievable rate, and degrees-of-freedom (DoF). Furthermore, various XL-MIMO design issues such as near-field beam codebook, beam training, channel estimation, and delay alignment modulation (DAM) transmission are elaborated. Finally, we point out promising directions to inspire future research on near-field XL-MIMO communications.
Near-field Integrated Sensing and Communication: Opportunities and Challenges

With the extremely large-scale array XL-array deployed in future wireless systems, wireless communication and sensing are expected to operate in the radiative near-field region, which needs to be characterized by the spherical rather than planar wavefronts. Unlike most existing works that considered far-field integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), we study in this article the new near-field ISAC, which integrates both functions of sensing and communication in the near-field region. To this end, we first discuss the appealing advantages of near-field communication and sensing over their far-field counterparts, respectively. Then, we introduce three approaches for near-field ISAC, including joint near-field communication and sensing, sensing-assisted near-field communication, and communication-assisted near-field sensing. We discuss their individual research opportunities, new design issues, as well as propose promising solutions. Finally, several important directions in near-field ISAC are also highlighted to motivate future work.
